Transit and Arrival Cost Notes
TTC Transit Budget
The TTC lists the post-secondary monthly pass at CAD 128.15, with a post-secondary photo ID requirement. Pay-as-you-go PRESTO, debit, credit and mobile wallet fares can work better for students who travel less often.

Arrival-Year Buffer
The calculator uses CAD 2,600 as a setup buffer. This can cover a rent deposit gap, basic household items, winter clothing, local transport setup and early food costs.

Financial Support Check for International Students
Canada’s financial support rules require students to show funds for tuition, living expenses and transportation. For applications on or after September 1, 2025, the published living-expense amount for one person outside Quebec is CAD 22,895, excluding tuition and transportation costs.
This page is a budget planning tool, not immigration, legal or financial advice. The Toronto calculator may show a higher living budget than the national minimum because local rent can be the largest cost driver.
Methodology and Source Notes
Tuition ranges are grouped by route because Toronto schools publish different fees by program, residency status, faculty, year level and course load. Toronto Metropolitan University publishes 2025-2026 full-time undergraduate ranges, including international student fees of CAD 36,806-42,498. University of Toronto notes that tuition depends on program, year, course load and campus, and that incidental or ancillary fees may also apply. York University and George Brown College direct students to program-specific fee pages.
Rent values are market estimates for student planning, not quoted leases. Shared room, shared flat, residence, studio and one-bedroom costs can vary by building, lease date, utilities, furnishing, meal plan and distance from campus. Transit values use TTC published fare information, including the CAD 128.15 post-secondary monthly pass figure.
Sources used for verification include TTC Fares and Passes, TTC Student Fares, IRCC Proof of Financial Support, Toronto Metropolitan University Tuition and Fees, University of Toronto Fees, York University Tuition and Fees and George Brown College International Tuition Fees.
