Toronto Student Budget Calculator 2026: Tuition, Rent and Transit Costs
Toronto budgeting starts with three separate decisions: the tuition route, the housing contract and the distance between home and campus. A lower advertised rent can lose its advantage when the lease excludes utilities or the commute extends beyond the TTC network.
Figures are planning estimates. Confirm programme fees, visa requirements and housing terms with the relevant official provider before making payments.
Why the Canadian Living-Funds Figure Is Not a Toronto Budget
For study-permit applications made on or after September 1, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada lists CAD 22,895 for one applicant outside Quebec. That amount excludes tuition and transportation, so it cannot be read as the full cash needed for a year in Toronto. [S1]
A Toronto plan also has to absorb the timing of tuition payments, the first rent, a possible last-month rent deposit, household setup and the cost of reaching campus. The gap is especially visible when private housing is secured before arrival: several payments can be due before monthly spending settles into a routine.

Toronto Rent Needs a Location and Contract Check
The University of Toronto’s student-life budgeting page places housing at CAD 1,220–2,700 per month and explains that location, privacy, building services and proximity to transit affect the amount. This is an institutional planning range rather than a citywide rent rule, but it shows why a single “Toronto average” is not enough for student budgeting. [S2]
Shared rooms near Scarborough or York University can follow a different cost pattern from a downtown room near St. George or Toronto Metropolitan University. A GTA address may reduce rent while adding GO Transit, regional bus or longer travel costs. Utilities, internet, furniture and meal-plan terms should be separated before two housing offers are compared.

What Is Due When a Toronto Lease Starts?
Ontario’s standard-lease guidance says a landlord may collect a last-month rent deposit and a refundable key deposit. The rent deposit cannot exceed one month’s rent or one rental period, whichever is less, and pet or damage deposits are not permitted under that guidance. [S3]
This does not make move-in a one-payment event. A student may still need the first month’s rent, the lawful last-month deposit, moving costs and essential household items close together. Residence contracts follow their own payment schedules, and meal plans can move part of the monthly food budget into a term-based charge.

Toronto Transit Changes During 2026
The TTC lists the post-secondary monthly pass at CAD 128.15. Its fare page also says monthly fare capping begins on September 1, 2026 and that monthly passes are discontinued after August 31, 2026. Students arriving for the fall term should therefore distinguish the pre-September pass system from the fare-capping system that follows. [S4]
Under the current student-fare rules, the post-secondary pass requires a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID Card. Pay-as-you-go post-secondary travel uses the adult TTC fare, so the monthly option is not automatically cheaper for a student who walks to campus or rides infrequently. [S5]

Tuition Route Matters More Than a City Average
Toronto Metropolitan University publishes a 2026–2027 full-time international undergraduate range of CAD 38,152–44,675, with the amount varying by program. The university states that fees are due by the start of classes. A different Toronto institution, degree level or professional program can produce a different invoice, so the calculator’s tuition routes are screening values rather than quoted fees. [S6]

A first-year total becomes more useful when it is arranged by payment date rather than treated as one annual number.
Tuition deposit, registration-related payments and any residence application or confirmation charge.
Lawful housing deposit, travel, temporary accommodation when needed and the first rent date.

Recurring rent, groceries, transit, health coverage, supplies and personal spending.
How the Toronto Estimate Is Built
The calculator works in Canadian dollars and combines the selected housing amount, campus-area adjustment and recurring food, transit, health, phone and personal-spending inputs. The lifestyle selector changes the monthly living estimate. Annual cost adds the selected tuition route to 12 months of living costs, while first-year cash need also includes the configured arrival allowance.
Housing and tuition tables are planning bands. They are not rental listings or programme invoices. The financial-support amount is kept separate because it serves an immigration-document purpose, while the Toronto model is designed to test actual spending and payment timing.
