Enter the annual tuition and monthly rent you actually expect to pay in each country. Add your non-rent monthly living costs in the closed section, then compare 12-month living budgets, first-year study costs and official student visa funding benchmarks.

UK vs Canada: What the First-Year Comparison Should Include

A useful comparison separates three different questions: what your university charges, what you expect to spend on housing and day-to-day life, and what immigration rules require you to demonstrate. The calculator therefore uses your own annual tuition, your own monthly rent and your own non-rent monthly living costs. It then keeps the official student visa funding rules visible as a separate benchmark rather than pretending that a legal proof-of-funds amount is the same as your personal budget.

The cost formula is intentionally symmetrical: monthly rent plus other recurring monthly costs gives the monthly student budget; that figure is multiplied by 12 for annual living cost; annual tuition is then added to estimate total first-year study cost. If you want to compare other destinations after this pair, the country cost pages can be used alongside the same budgeting logic.

Tuition: Use the Fee on Your Offer, CAS or University Account

There is no single international tuition price that safely represents every UK course. For the UK Student visa, the relevant course-fee amount is the amount required for one academic year, up to nine months, as shown on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Paid course fees can reduce the outstanding amount when the payment is properly confirmed by the sponsor. [S1] [S2]

University-level 2026 examples show why a national placeholder can be misleading. UCL publishes different overseas fees by programme for 2026/27 and directs applicants to the programme-specific fee schedule rather than one universal international price. [S7] The calculator therefore asks for the annual tuition that applies to your actual course.

Canada also varies strongly by province, level and field of study. Statistics Canada's 2025/26 national survey reported average international undergraduate tuition of C$41,746, while the provincial figures ranged substantially. That statistic is useful context, not a substitute for your institution's invoice or fee schedule. [S6]

Rent: Compare the Contract You Are Likely to Sign

Rent can change the result faster than small differences in food or phone spending. In the UK, London often carries a higher housing burden, which is one reason the Student visa maintenance rule has a separate London rate. UCL's 2026/27 cost guide, for example, lists an average of GBP 320 per week for common undergraduate self-catered hall room types and a much wider range across accommodation options. [S7]

Canadian housing costs are similarly local. University of Toronto's student housing guidance notes that rental costs in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area vary substantially by housing type and location, using current university listings and public rental datasets to describe the market. [S8] For that reason, this page does not assign one national Canadian rent figure. Enter the rent you expect from a residence offer, lease, room listing or realistic local search.

Student Visa Funds: UK Maintenance vs Canada Proof of Financial Support

United Kingdom

For a standard Student visa applicant who must meet the financial requirement, the UK maintenance amount is GBP 1,529 per month for study in London or GBP 1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. That produces a maximum maintenance benchmark of GBP 13,761 in London or GBP 10,539 outside London. The applicant must also cover the required course fees shown on the CAS. [S1]

The Immigration Rules also state that qualifying funds generally must be held for a 28-day period. Certain payments already made to the sponsor can affect the amount that still needs to be demonstrated, including confirmed course-fee payments and, within the rule's limit, a sponsor-arranged accommodation deposit. [S2]

Canada

For a single study-permit applicant outside Quebec, IRCC's published table requires C$22,895 for first-year living expenses for applications made on or after September 1, 2025. That amount excludes tuition and transportation, which must also be financially supported. [S3]

Canada updates the financial requirement each September. Official 2026 federal planning material confirms an increase effective September 1, 2026, and the University of Toronto's international student immigration guidance identifies the new single-applicant living-expense amount as C$23,448 for applications submitted on or after that date. [S4] [S5]

Quebec uses a separate financial-capacity framework connected with the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ). The Canada benchmark in this calculator is for provinces and territories outside Quebec. [S3]

Why Visa Funds Are Not the Same as Your Real Annual Budget

The UK's maintenance figure is capped at nine months, while this calculator models 12 months of recurring living costs. A student with a 12-month lease should therefore not treat the nine-month immigration benchmark as a prediction of total annual spending. The official amount is evidence for a visa rule; your rent contract and personal spending pattern determine your actual budget.

Canada's living-expense threshold is annual, but IRCC explicitly separates it from tuition and transportation. It is a minimum financial-support requirement, not a promise that C$22,895 or C$23,448 will cover every student in every Canadian city. [S3] This is why the calculator compares the legal benchmark with a user-built living budget rather than using the benchmark as an automatic cost estimate.

The First-Year Cost Difference Can Move with Exchange Rates

The UK and Canada totals are most useful in their local currencies because tuition and rent are actually billed in GBP and CAD. For a single cross-country comparison, this calculator converts the UK first-year estimate into Canadian dollars using the Bank of Canada indicative daily average rate of 1 GBP = 1.8868 CAD published for August 26, 2026. [S9]

That converted difference is a comparison aid only. Exchange rates can move before tuition instalments, residence payments or rent transfers are due, and banks or payment providers can add spreads or fees. For a future payment decision, rerun the comparison with current costs and review the latest exchange rate rather than treating this page's stored rate as a guaranteed transaction rate. You can also use the site's study cost calculators for a fresh budget scenario.

Methodology

Included costs: annual tuition entered by the user, monthly rent entered by the user and other recurring monthly living costs entered by the user. The calculator does not automatically add visa application fees, health surcharges, airfare, refundable housing deposits, tuition deposits, insurance, books or one-time arrival purchases because these can differ by student, programme, immigration route or contract.

UK formula: UK monthly student budget = UK monthly rent + UK other monthly living costs. UK annual living cost = UK monthly student budget x 12. UK total first-year study cost = UK annual living cost + UK annual tuition.

Canada formula: Canada monthly student budget = Canada monthly rent + Canada other monthly living costs. Canada annual living cost = Canada monthly student budget x 12. Canada total first-year study cost = Canada annual living cost + Canada annual tuition.

Visa-funds treatment: UK maintenance is displayed separately as GBP 1,171 per month outside London or GBP 1,529 per month in London for up to nine months. Canada is displayed separately as C$22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec for applications before September 1, 2026, and C$23,448 for applications on or after September 1, 2026. The calculator does not add these living-funds benchmarks on top of the user's living costs because doing so would double-count the same category of spending.

Currency comparison: UK total in CAD = UK total in GBP x 1.8868. Cross-country difference = absolute value of Canada total in CAD minus converted UK total in CAD. The stored exchange rate is the Bank of Canada daily average for August 26, 2026 and is indicative only. [S9]

Planning ranges: this page avoids turning one university's housing estimate into a national rent average. Official university and statistical examples are used only to explain variation. The calculator's cost result is driven by the user's own expected tuition, rent and recurring living costs.
