Tuition Routes Matter More Than the Country Average
The U.S. calculator uses three institution-specific 2026–27 routes. The University of South Alabama lists out-of-state tuition and fees of $22,030. [S1] The University of Minnesota Twin Cities lists nonresident undergraduate tuition and fees of $43,348. [S2] NYU lists tuition and mandatory fees of $68,576 for many undergraduate programmes. [S3]
Canada’s latest national weighted average for international undergraduate tuition was C$41,746 for 2025–26, but an individual offer can fall well below or above that level. [S4] The University of Manitoba estimates C$22,000 for a full-time international University 1 year. [S5] UBC’s 2026–27 international undergraduate fees include C$51,530.40 for Arts, C$66,199.66 for Applied Science and C$66,678.30 for Commerce. [S6]
A student comparing merit aid, mandatory fees or programme-specific charges can test those details in a USA-specific cost model rather than treating the published sticker price as the final amount.

Academic-Year Housing Can Hide the 12-Month Cost
University housing pages commonly quote an academic-year package rather than a full calendar year. South Alabama publishes $12,356 for on-campus housing and meals, Minnesota uses $15,552 for housing and food, and NYU uses $26,438 for food and housing in its 2026–27 attendance budgets. [S1][S2][S3]
In Canada, St. Andrew’s College at the University of Manitoba lists an eight-month room and meal package of C$11,000. [S7] UBC places a typical first-year room and meal plan between C$14,000 and C$18,100. [S8] St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto lists 2026–27 residence and meal-plan routes from C$18,035 to C$24,538. [S9]

The calculator converts each academic-year package to a monthly amount and then applies that amount to a 12-month planning period. This exposes the cost of summer housing, a lease extension or another accommodation route after residence closes. Students examining provincial differences, permit costs and Canadian city profiles can also use a Canada-specific budget route.
Insurance Is Priced Through Different Systems
U.S. insurance is often attached to the university unless the student qualifies for a waiver. Minnesota’s latest published international undergraduate budget includes $3,590 for mandatory health insurance in 2025–26. [S10] NYU’s 2026–27 Washington Square annual rates are $4,747 for the Basic Plan and $5,397 for the Comprehensive Plan. [S11]
Canadian costs depend on the province, waiting period and institution. Manitoba’s 2026–27 international student health plan totals C$1,200 for fall and winter coverage. [S12] UBC’s first-year primary-coverage profile combines C$237 for iMED, a C$10.54 direct-billing fee and nine months of C$75 provincial health premiums after the waiting period, producing a C$922.54 planning amount. Visa Fees and Financial Evidence Are Not the Same Cost
U.S. Visa and Financial Evidence
The standard F-1 student visa application fee is $185. [S15] The I-901 SEVIS fee for an F or M student is $350, producing a $535 application-stage total before any nationality-based issuance fee. [S16]
There is no single federal dollar figure used as the living-cost requirement for every school. The student must demonstrate financial ability for tuition, books and living expenses, while the institution’s documented cost estimate affects the amount shown for the programme. [S19]
Canadian Study Permit and Financial Evidence
The study-permit fee is C$150 and biometrics cost C$85 when required, producing a C$235 application-stage amount. [S17]
For a single applicant applying on or after September 1, 2025, the living-expense evidence amount outside Quebec is C$22,895, excluding tuition and transportation. [S18] It is a financial-evidence threshold, not a promise that C$22,895 will cover any city, housing contract or personal spending pattern.
Methodology
The comparison uses 2026–27 official university figures where published. Minnesota’s international insurance value uses the latest posted 2025–26 figure available on July 17, 2026.
Canadian values are converted at US$0.7124 per Canadian dollar, based on the Bank of Canada daily exchange rate for July 16, 2026. [S20] Currency conversion is applied after the original local-currency amount is stored.
Tuition and insurance are treated as annual costs. Published U.S. academic-year housing packages are divided by nine months, while the Canadian campus contracts represented here are divided by eight months. The resulting monthly amount is multiplied by 12 for annual planning. This does not assume that the same campus room remains available during the summer.
Other monthly living-cost options combine books, local transport, phone and personal spending into one adjustable allowance. Visa or permit fees and the selected setup allowance are added once to the first-year result. Scholarships, grants, employment income, U.S. net-price adjustments, refundable deposits and travel to the destination are excluded.
