Official Funding Rules Do Not Use One Standard Time Period
A monthly city estimate and an official financial-support requirement answer different questions. The comparison period, excluded costs and access to the money must be checked before treating an official amount as a complete living budget.
Up to 9 Months
The Student visa financial requirement is £1,529 per month for London or £1,171 outside London, calculated for up to nine months. Course fees are assessed separately through the CAS amount.[S1]
A visa evidence amount may cover nine months, one year or a restricted monthly release schedule. It should not be converted into a city affordability ranking without first matching the period and cost categories.

Monthly Living Cost Comparison
Selected cities show estimated average monthly student living costs in USD, excluding tuition.
Fallback: New York, London, Sydney, Toronto, and Paris sit in the highest monthly cost band, while Warsaw, Kuala Lumpur, and Istanbul sit lower.
Normalize Housing Offers Before Comparing Cities
A listed room price is not directly comparable until the contract period, included services and move-in payment are converted to the same basis. This check can change which city appears affordable.
Convert the Payment Period
Weekly, Semester or Monthly
Convert weekly rent using the full annual number of weeks rather than multiplying by four. Check whether a residence contract covers the academic term, nine months, ten months or the full calendar year.
Identify Included Costs
Rent Is Not Always the Full Housing Cost
Record whether electricity, heating, water, internet, furniture, laundry, meal plans or campus transport are included. A higher advertised rent may produce a lower final monthly total when several bills are bundled.
Separate Move-In Cash
Deposits Do Not Belong in Monthly Rent
Track the security deposit, first rent, booking charge, guarantor cost and household setup separately. Use the student rent budget calculator when housing is the main source of uncertainty.
Monthly Budget Breakdown
Most student budgets move because of housing, not small daily purchases. The lower-cost route assumes shared housing and basic spending; the higher route assumes a private studio or tight rental market.

Monthly Affordability and Arrival Cash Are Separate Tests
A student may be able to cover routine monthly expenses but still lack enough cash for the weeks before classes begin. Review both positions before accepting a housing contract or paying a tuition deposit.
Recurring Budget Test
Can the Monthly Plan Continue?
Compare dependable funding with rent, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, communications and personal spending. Do not count uncertain employment income as confirmed support.
A sustainable monthly result should still leave room for irregular costs such as medicine, course supplies, winter clothing and local travel.
Arrival Cash Test
Can the First Payments Be Made on Time?
List tuition or residence deposits, rental security, first rent, travel, temporary accommodation, insurance activation and basic household purchases by payment date.
The calculator’s first-year result adds its configured arrival allowance, but institution charges, visa costs and individual housing deposits still require separate verification.
Calculation Method and Data Scope
The calculator combines the selected housing value and city adjustment with fixed planning inputs for food, transport, insurance, phone service and personal spending. The lifestyle selection adjusts the recurring cost profile. The annual output applies the calculator’s twelve-month model and adds the selected tuition route where applicable.
City values are normalized to USD to support cross-city comparison. They are not foreign-exchange quotes and should not be used to schedule payments. Replace the model values with local-currency rent offers, university fee schedules, transport tariffs, insurance quotes and current exchange rates when building a personal budget.
The city table uses ranges because students in the same city can face different costs according to campus distance, housing type, contract length, included utilities and neighborhood. The upper and lower values should be read as budgeting routes rather than fixed city averages.
Official proof-of-funds systems are shown only to explain differences in periods and coverage. They do not determine the calculator’s city values, predict a visa decision or guarantee that the required amount will cover a student’s actual spending.
