University Tuition Cost Calculator 2026 by Country and Degree Level

Compare tuition routes only after identifying the student’s fee status, institution type, degree level, field of study and billing period. A national average can sit far above or below the amount shown on an individual university invoice.

Figures are planning estimates. Confirm programme fees, visa requirements and housing terms with the relevant official provider before making payments.

The Fee Rule Comes Before the Country Average

The country selector provides a broad cost profile. The amount actually billed can change when citizenship, residence status, previous qualifications, public funding rules or programme type moves the student into another fee category.

Netherlands

Statutory or Institutional

DUO lists statutory tuition of €2,694 for the 2026–2027 academic year. Eligibility depends on the programme, nationality or residence position and previous government-funded degrees. Students who do not satisfy the statutory criteria generally face an institution-set fee. [S1]

Germany

State Rules Matter

Many German public routes have no general tuition, yet this is not a nationwide promise for every international student. Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 per semester to many students arriving from outside the EU and EEA, with listed exemptions for several groups. [S2]

France

National and Institution Charges

France’s Service-Public portal lists 2026–2027 standard national registration fees of €178 for a licence, €255 for a master and €397 for a doctorate. It also lists a €105 CVEC for the same academic year, while institution-owned diplomas can carry separately determined prices. [S3]

United States

Published Price or Net Price

The amount advertised by a university is not necessarily the amount a student pays. The U.S. Department of Education defines net price as the annual attendance cost remaining after scholarships and grants are subtracted. [S4]

Students comparing systems rather than individual universities can use the separate country tuition comparison to distinguish public, private, domestic and international fee routes before converting them into a total annual budget.

A Master’s Degree Is Not Automatically the Higher Annual Fee

Degree labels do not move tuition in one fixed direction. Public funding rules, programme length, subject area and the institution’s pricing method can matter more than whether the course is undergraduate or postgraduate.

Canada’s National Pattern

Undergraduate Above Graduate

Statistics Canada reports expected 2025–2026 average international tuition of CAD 41,746 for undergraduate study and CAD 24,028 for graduate study. These are national weighted averages rather than promises for a particular province, field or university. [S5]

Australia’s Domestic CSP Route

Discipline-Based Contributions

Australian students in Commonwealth supported places pay student contribution amounts linked to funding clusters. StudyAssist lists different 2026 maximum amounts for fields such as education, nursing, computing, law and medicine; these figures are not general international tuition rates. [S6]

Tuition CheckQuestion to AnswerWhy It Changes the Comparison
Student statusIs the applicant domestic, EU or EEA, resident, international or covered by an exemption? The same programme can have separate statutory, subsidised and international prices.
Billing unitIs the amount annual, semester-based, programme-wide or charged per credit? Two similar-looking numbers can represent different portions of the degree.
Subject or facultyDoes the university use one fee or separate bands for each discipline?Business, laboratory, clinical and professional courses can sit outside general university ranges.
Programme durationHow many billed semesters or academic years are required?A shorter programme with higher annual tuition can still cost less over the full degree.
Mandatory chargesAre registration, student services, laboratory or campus charges separate? The tuition headline may not equal the amount due before enrolment.
Aid conditionsIs the scholarship confirmed, renewable and applied before the payment deadline? An award that starts later may not reduce the cash required for the first invoice.

Annual Cost Comparison Chart

Estimated First-Year Cost by Country

Bar values use a mid-range undergraduate tuition estimate plus 12 months of student living costs.

Countries with low tuition can still require a healthy cash buffer because rent, deposits, insurance, and setup costs are separate from tuition.

Keep Three Tuition Numbers in the Application File

A reliable university comparison records the advertised amount, the full institutional invoice and the student’s final payable amount separately. Combining them too early can hide mandatory charges or count unconfirmed aid.

Published Tuition

The Starting Figure

Record the exact degree, intake, campus, study load and fee year. A figure for one faculty or cohort should not be extended to the whole institution.

Amount Invoiced

Tuition Plus Required Charges

Add compulsory registration, student-service, laboratory, examination or campus charges only when the university lists them for that programme.

Net Student Price

After Confirmed Aid

Subtract only grants and scholarships that have been formally awarded and can be used for the relevant payment period. The U.S. Department of Education applies the same distinction when describing net price. [S4]

Before accepting an offer

Identify any non-refundable acceptance or tuition deposit and confirm whether it is later credited against the first invoice.

Before enrolment

Check whether the university requires a semester payment, annual payment or approved instalment arrangement.

Before using a scholarship

Record its value, eligible expenses, start date, payment method and renewal requirements.

Before converting currencies

Keep the original fee currency in the application file and use the USD result only as a comparison layer.

How the Planning Model Should Be Read

The calculator uses USD to place several country and degree routes on one planning scale. Its country selection adjusts the recurring living-cost profile, while the tuition selection supplies a broad annual fee assumption. Housing and lifestyle choices then change the modelled monthly spending.

The annual result combines the selected tuition route with 12 months of modelled living expenses. The first-year result also includes the arrival allowance configured in the calculator. Available budget and confirmed support are used to show a planning gap and score.

The searchable table and chart contain comparison ranges rather than live university fee schedules. Exchange rates are not updated inside the calculator, and a university’s exact programme invoice may sit outside a displayed range. Official national figures in the editorial sections retain their original currencies and academic-year references.
