Spain Study Cost Calculator 2026: Tuition, Rent and Annual Budget

Spain has no single public-university tuition price: regional credit rates, student status, city choice and the wording of the rental contract can each change the first-year cash requirement.

Figures are planning estimates. Confirm programme fees, visa requirements and housing terms with the relevant official provider before making payments.

Planning Estimate

Monthly Cost Split by Student Route

The chart compares common housing and city choices before tuition is added.

Fallback: shared housing in lower-cost cities keeps the monthly estimate near €760, while private studios in Barcelona or Madrid can move above €1,600.

The €600 Visa Figure Is Not a Full Student Budget

For a student applying alone, Spain’s 2026 study-visa financial-means reference is €600 for each month of the proposed stay. That figure is used for the application assessment; it does not represent a national estimate of tuition, rent, deposits or total annual spending. [S1]

Planning MeasureWhat It RepresentsWhat Must Be Added Separately
Study-Visa Financial MeansA monthly evidence threshold used for the relevant immigration routeTuition, rental deposit, contract-specific charges and city-level housing pressure
Calculator Annual ResultTwelve months of modelled living costs plus the selected tuition routeAny institutional charge or housing payment not represented by the selected options
First-Year Cash NeedThe annual model plus the arrival allowance configured in the calculatorPayments that exceed the modelled arrival allowance or become due earlier than expected

A student using twelve months as the planning period would therefore separate the immigration evidence test from the practical budget. A room in a lower-cost city and a private studio in Barcelona may be assessed under the same monthly visa reference even though their rental commitments differ.

Spanish City Costs Move on Housing Supply, Not a National Average

The table keeps the city ranges used by the planning system. They are model bands rather than official rent statistics, and they are most useful for seeing how the same housing choice changes across different study locations.

Public Tuition Is Set Regionally and Charged by Credit

A national “public tuition in Spain” figure can hide the decision that matters: the autonomous community, programme type, credit load and whether the enrolment is a first or later registration.

Catalonia, 2026–2027

First-registration bachelor’s credits at Catalonia’s listed public universities are priced at €17.69 per credit. The UOC rate is €20.42 per credit, while private universities and affiliated centres set their own prices. [S2]

Public Master’s Routes

Catalonia lists €19.37 per credit for first registration in public official master’s programmes not tied to a regulated profession and €17.69 for the listed regulated-profession route. [S2]

Madrid’s public-university information also describes a regional credit-price system: the tuition bill is calculated by multiplying the applicable ECTS price by the credits enrolled, and a full academic year commonly contains 60 ECTS. Repeated enrolment in the same subject can move the credit into a higher price category. [S3]

This is why tuition and living costs should be checked separately. A programme based in the capital can use one regional academic-price structure while the student’s Madrid housing and daily-cost plan follows a different set of assumptions.

A Student Lease Can Produce a One-Month or Two-Month Statutory Deposit

The amount described as the legal deposit depends on how the contract is classified, not merely on the fact that the tenant is a student.

Dwelling Lease

Article 36 of Spain’s Urban Leases Act sets the cash deposit at one month of rent for a residential dwelling lease. [S4]

Use Other Than a Dwelling

The same article sets two months of rent for a lease classified as use other than a dwelling. Article 3 includes seasonal letting within that category, so a fixed study-period contract may not follow the same deposit treatment as a primary-home lease. [S4]

The budget should therefore read the proposed contract before treating “deposit” as one fixed national number. First rent, the statutory deposit and any separately agreed guarantee should be recorded as different lines rather than merged into an average monthly rent.

The First 90 Days Have a Different Payment Order

A student may have enough money across the full year and still face an early cash shortage because several payments are collected before monthly spending settles into a routine.

Before the Visa Decision

Prepare the required financial evidence and qualifying health-insurance documentation. The official study-visa instructions require health coverage from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with coverage for the authorised stay. [S1]

Before or During Enrolment

Allow for the university’s payment schedule, credit load and any amount that must be settled before registration is completed. A calculator tuition category is a planning route and does not replace the institution’s invoice.

At Housing Entry

Separate first rent from the deposit required by the contract classification. Temporary accommodation can also overlap with the first long-term rental payment when the student arrives before gaining access to the room.

After Arrival

For a study stay longer than six months, the foreign student must apply personally for the foreigner identity card within one month of entering Spain. [S5]

How the Spain Planning Model Is Read

The calculator combines the selected city adjustment, housing value and recurring spending inputs, then applies the chosen lifestyle level. The annual result adds the selected tuition route to twelve months of modelled living costs. The first-year result also includes the arrival allowance configured in the calculator.

The city table and chart are editorial planning bands, not official national averages. Official amounts stated elsewhere on the page are limited to the cited public-authority pages and retain the scope shown by those authorities, including academic year, region, contract category or immigration route.
