The Admission Fee Makes Year One Different
Japan’s official academic-fee tables combine admission and tuition when presenting first-year averages. The published references are about ¥820,000 for a national undergraduate route, ¥910,000 for a local public route and ¥1.3 million for a private undergraduate route excluding medical, dental and pharmaceutical programmes; course materials and practical training can add separate charges. A student comparing years should separate the one-time admission charge from recurring tuition. Treating the first-year invoice as an annual amount for every later year can overstate the continuing academic budget, while ignoring it can leave the opening cash plan too low.
Tokyo Changes Rent and the Commute Together
JASSO’s 2023 survey reference places monthly living expenses at ¥105,000 excluding study and research costs. Housing averages ¥41,000 nationally and ¥57,000 in Tokyo, and the official page notes that difficulty finding accommodation near metropolitan schools can also raise commuting costs. [S2]

The city totals above are calculator profiles rather than official rent quotations. A student choosing between a dormitory and a private lease may also need a separate rent-focused budget, because the move-in bill and the recurring monthly amount do not rise in the same way.
A Dorm Price Does Not Describe the Whole Housing Market
The official accommodation page gives ¥28,000 as a student-dormitory guideline at JASSO’s Tokyo Japanese Language Education Center, while its private-apartment examples are about ¥30,000–¥40,000 in rural areas and about ¥60,000 as a Tokyo target. Dormitories can reduce setup spending because furniture may be included and rental deposits or gratuity money may not apply, but room supply is limited. [S3]

Key Money and Guarantor Fees Can Arrive Before the First Month
Saitama University’s official housing guidance illustrates how a private contract may be front-loaded: a deposit of one to two months’ rent, key money of one to two months, a brokerage fee of roughly half to one month, fire insurance of about ¥20,000 and a guarantor-company fee of roughly half to one month. These are local guidance examples, not a fixed national tariff. [S4]

The First-Year Payment Sequence
The order of payments matters because university fees, visa evidence and housing cash can be required before ordinary monthly spending begins.
1. School Acceptance
The Study in Japan planning flow places acceptance and the transfer of academic fees before travel, followed by the Certificate of Eligibility and visa process. [S5]
2. Financial Evidence
A student visa or Certificate of Eligibility application may require evidence that the applicant or guarantor can pay all expenses during the stay, such as savings and income documents. [S6]
3. Housing Contract
Dormitory setup or private-rental charges can fall between acceptance and arrival, so this cash should not be hidden inside the later monthly rent assumption.
4. Resident Registration
After deciding where to live, eligible residence-card holders register the address with the municipal office within 14 days. [S6]
5. National Health Insurance
Foreign residents staying for three months or more enter National Health Insurance; registration follows resident registration, and premiums depend on municipal assessment and prior-year income. [S7]
Methodology
The calculator separates housing from food, transport, insurance, phone and personal spending, then applies the selected city and lifestyle settings. Tuition is added as an annual input, while the configured arrival allowance is added only to the first-year result.
The recurring baseline is aligned with the official ¥105,000 monthly living-cost reference, but the city adjustments, housing choices and arrival allowance are planning-model inputs. The amount actually payable is set by the university invoice, housing contract, municipal insurance assessment and funding terms.
