Hidden Costs of Studying Abroad 2026: Deposits, Visa Fees and Setup Costs

The amount shown as tuition is rarely the amount needed to reach the first day of class. Visa charges, compulsory health cover, admission payments, housing deposits, travel and move-in purchases can create a separate cash requirement months before regular student spending begins.

Figures are planning estimates. Confirm programme fees, visa requirements and housing terms with the relevant official provider before making payments.

The First-Year Bill Arrives in Layers

International students can face several payment dates before rent and groceries become the main concern. Application fees may be non-refundable, and some programmes request a tuition deposit after admission. [S1] Japan’s official study portal lists admission fees separately from tuition and presents average academic fees for the first year. [S2]

Before an Offer

Applications and documents

Possible payments include application charges, language tests, certified copies, translations, courier services and travel for an examination or interview.

After Admission

Seat and visa payments

A tuition deposit, admission fee, visa application, biometric appointment, health cover or residence booking may be due before the student can travel.

Move-In Period

Housing and setup cash

A holding payment, security deposit, first rent, temporary lodging, transport pass, bedding, kitchen items and utility activation can fall within the same few weeks.

These amounts should sit beside, not inside, the normal monthly plan. A student comparing recurring rent, food and transport can use a broader international student budget, then add the payment schedule below as a separate first-year cash layer.

Visa and Compulsory Cover Examples for 2026

A headline visa price can omit a second government charge, a biometric fee or compulsory insurance. The examples below show why the immigration line should be split into separate payments.

DestinationOfficial charges or required coverBudget treatment
United KingdomA Student visa application from outside the UK costs £558. [S3] The student Immigration Health Surcharge rate is £776 per year, with the payable total linked to visa length. [S4]Keep the visa fee and health surcharge as separate pre-travel lines.
CanadaThe study permit fee is CAD 150. [S5] An individual biometric fee is CAD 85 when biometrics are required. [S6]Add both amounts unless an official exemption applies to the applicant.
United StatesThe I-901 SEVIS fee for an F or M student is $350. [S7] The non-petition-based visa application fee covering F students is $185. [S8]Reserve both amounts before the visa interview because they are separate payments.
AustraliaFor applications from July 1, 2026, the Subclass 500 Student visa charge starts from AUD 2,500. [S9] Student visa holders must maintain Overseas Student Health Cover. [S10]Price the visa and the full required insurance period before using leftover cash for housing.

Currency amounts in this table are not converted because each payment is made under the destination’s own fee system. Exchange-rate movement and card charges can therefore change the home-currency amount on the payment date.

Housing Deposits Are Cash-Flow Costs

A refundable deposit may return after the tenancy, but it still reduces the cash available during arrival. In England, a tenancy deposit is generally capped at five weeks’ rent when annual rent is below £50,000, while a holding deposit can be up to one week’s rent. [S11]

France: Furnished Housing

Up to two months of rent

For a standard furnished principal-residence lease, the security deposit can be up to two months of rent excluding charges. [S12] First rent and other permitted payments may still be due separately.

France: Mobility Lease

No security deposit

A qualifying mobility lease does not allow the landlord to request a security deposit, although a guarantor may still be requested. [S13] The contract type therefore changes the move-in cash requirement.

Before paying, separate four terms in the housing offer: reservation or holding payment, refundable security deposit, rent paid in advance and non-refundable service charges. Their names and legal treatment differ by destination, and a single label such as “housing deposit” can hide more than one transaction.

A Payment Calendar for Hidden Costs

The most useful budget is dated. A student may have enough money for the year in total yet still miss a deadline because several large payments are due before a scholarship instalment, loan disbursement or family transfer arrives.

Build the Setup Reserve Separately

Start with payments that cannot be delayed: admission or tuition deposit, government fees, required health cover and housing entry costs. Add travel, temporary lodging and basic household purchases. Then keep a timing cushion for exchange-rate movement, card charges or a delayed refund.

Non-Refundable

Applications, visas, biometrics, some admission charges, tests and document services.

Refundable but Unavailable

Housing security deposits and some reservation payments held until a later date.

Credited Later

Tuition or residence deposits that reduce a later invoice after enrolment.

First-Year Only

Admission fees, initial furnishings, utility activation and one-time travel setup.

A payment counted in the setup reserve should not be counted again in the annual tuition or monthly living budget. Mark every deposit as refundable, credited or non-refundable to prevent double counting.

Methodology

The calculator uses 2026 planning values in US dollars. Its fixed monthly non-housing inputs are $350 for food, $100 for transport, $150 for insurance and healthcare, $40 for phone service and $220 for personal spending. Housing, destination profile and annual tuition are selected separately. The $3,500 arrival allowance represents a baseline for visa, deposits, travel and setup rather than an official worldwide tariff.

The profile bands are deliberately broad because official institutional figures show wide housing differences. UCL lists shared privately rented accommodation at about £650–£1,300 per month. [S14] The University of Toronto lists housing at CAD 1,220–2,700 per month. [S15] Japan’s official study portal reports average monthly housing of ¥41,000 nationally and ¥57,000 in Tokyo. [S16]

Tuition options are annual planning bands, not destination averages. The amount on the formal offer should be used for a final budget. Weekly rent should be converted to a monthly equivalent before comparing it with the housing options, while semester fees should be annualised only when they recur across the academic year.
