Data quality: direct official 2026 accommodation and tuition records are used for the selectable profiles. Food, personal spending, transport and OSHC remain editable because they depend on individual use, policy duration and provider quotations.
What the comparison holds constant
The tuition selections use full-time international-student examples rather than mixing domestic subsidised places with overseas fee-paying routes. The University of Sydney’s 2026 guide places undergraduate arts and social sciences from A$49,200, business from A$56,300 and engineering or computer science at A$60,600. [S1]
Melbourne tuition is modelled from the University of Melbourne’s subject-based schedule. A normal annual study load is represented as eight subjects worth 0.125 EFTSL each. Humanities examples priced at A$6,188 per subject produce A$49,504 for one EFTSL; economics subjects at A$7,232 produce A$57,856; and mathematics subjects at A$7,476 produce A$59,808. Rent profiles can change the expected result
The Sydney selections come from the University of Sydney’s 2026 residence schedule. At Queen Mary Building, the published 52-week rates include A$306 per week for a twin loft, A$374 for a single room, A$417 for a room in a two-bedroom apartment and A$453 for a studio or studio loft. [S3]
The Melbourne selections use Lisa Bellear House, where 2026 rates run from A$439 per week for a twin studio to A$611 for a private studio. The published rates apply to six- and twelve-month agreements and include utilities and Wi-Fi, which makes a direct comparison with a private rental or a residence charging utilities separately less reliable. These residence profiles do not prove that Melbourne is more expensive across the whole rental market. The University of Sydney publishes a much wider accommodation planning range of A$980 to A$3,500 per month, reflecting the difference between shared rooms, studios, student housing and locations near campus. [S5] Students testing private rentals, different contract lengths or outer suburbs can build a separate Sydney student budget model.
The University of Melbourne reports a metropolitan median of A$475 per week for a one-bedroom flat and A$575 for a two-bedroom flat, but those figures describe whole properties rather than one student’s share. [S6] A detailed Melbourne student budget model is more suitable when several housemates will divide a property-level rent.
Tuition differences depend on the subjects selected
A city comparison becomes misleading when a lower-fee arts course in one city is compared with an engineering or clinical course in the other. The calculator therefore keeps each tuition selector independent while offering broad profiles that can be paired by academic area.

Sydney publishes first-year guides by faculty and course level, while Melbourne charges many international students according to the subjects in their enrolment. A Melbourne degree mixing humanities, mathematics and commerce subjects may therefore sit between the profiles shown here. Sydney course exceptions and combined degrees can also fall outside the broad faculty bands.
OSHC usually does not decide which city is cheaper
The University of Sydney states that international students must maintain OSHC for the duration of their studies and can have cover organised through its Allianz arrangement. [S7] The University of Melbourne likewise requires visa-length OSHC unless an exemption applies and can arrange cover through Bupa. [S8]
The calculator begins with A$750 per year on both sides. This is a rounded planning input based on a Bupa single-cover quote example of A$178.20 for three months in New South Wales, annualised and rounded upward. Bupa states that the price can change when the applicant’s details change. [S9]

The result reverses when a higher-priced Sydney private rental replaces the listed university residence, when the Melbourne student shares a private property below the university-accommodation rate, or when the selected Sydney course carries a higher tuition fee. The calculator is designed to expose those changes rather than assign one permanent winner.
Transport has an unusual 2026 timing effect
The Sydney transport field begins at A$200 per month, which sits within the University of Sydney’s published A$130 to A$800 monthly range. The broad range accounts for travel frequency, distance and transport choices rather than promising one student fare.
Victoria reduced public transport fares by half from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027. During that period, the full-fare daily maximum fell from A$11.40 to A$5.70. [S10] The A$178 Melbourne input blends five months at the earlier cap with seven months at the reduced cap and assumes 22 chargeable travel days per month. Students using the Free Tram Zone, travelling fewer days or qualifying for another concession can enter a lower amount.
Methodology
All amounts are in Australian dollars and use 2026 source material. Weekly accommodation prices are normalised to monthly values with the formula weekly rent × 52 ÷ 12. The calculator treats rent, food, transport, phone and personal spending as recurring monthly expenses.
Sydney tuition inputs use the University of Sydney’s full-time 2026 international fee guides. Melbourne inputs use eight subjects of 0.125 EFTSL to represent one annual EFTSL and multiply the relevant published subject fee by eight. These Melbourne values are subject-load examples rather than guaranteed course prices.
Monthly cost equals housing plus food, transport, phone and personal spending. Annual living cost equals the monthly result multiplied by 12. The displayed study budget adds annual tuition and the selected OSHC amount. Rental bonds, application fees, flights, course materials, tuition deposits and optional insurance extras are outside this calculation.
The default OSHC amount is rounded from a current insurer quote example. The Sydney transport amount is a user-adjustable value within the university’s monthly range. The Melbourne transport amount blends the two fare periods that apply during 2026. Direct tuition and residence records are treated as data quality A; modelled everyday spending and period-normalised values are treated as data quality B.
