UK vs Australia Study Cost 2026: Tuition, Rent and Student Visa Costs
Compare two separate first-year routes in one currency, with city-level rent, institution-based tuition, visa charges, health cover and arrival cash kept apart.
Figures are planning estimates. Confirm programme fees, visa requirements and housing terms with the relevant official provider before making payments.
Compare a UK and Australia first-year route
Choose one city, housing route, annual tuition route, health-cover period and arrival allowance for each country. Australian dollar inputs are converted to pounds so the difference is shown on one basis.

What the comparison is measuring
The UK route separates the £558 Student visa application charge from the Immigration Health Surcharge. The surcharge is £776 per visa year for students, and the amount due follows the visa length rather than the course fee schedule. [S1][S2]
Australia uses a different sequence. From July 1, 2026, the Student visa application charge starts at AUD 2,500, while Overseas Student Health Cover must normally run for the duration of the student’s stay. [S3][S4]
The result therefore compares first-year cash rather than claiming that one national average fits every student. Tuition is selected from named institutional references, rent is attached to a city profile, and setup money remains visible instead of being hidden inside a monthly total.
Tuition can reverse the result before rent is added
There is no single international tuition tariff for either country. A lower-fee UK undergraduate reference can sit far below a specialist or business programme, while an Australian course priced per credit point can produce a different annual bill even at the same university.
| Country | Official 2026/27 reference | How the calculator uses it |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Wrexham University lists £11,750 for international undergraduate study in 2026/27. [S5] | Lower-fee undergraduate route |
| UK | The University of Lincoln gives a typical international range of £16,900–£22,100. [S6] | £19,500 planning midpoint |
| UK | Alliance Manchester Business School lists £33,100 for international undergraduates. [S7] | Higher-fee business route |
| Australia | RMIT’s 2026 Bachelor of Education reference is AUD 36,480. [S8] | Lower bachelor route |
| Australia | RMIT’s 2026 Bachelor of Laws reference is AUD 45,120. [S8] | Middle tuition selection |
| Australia | RMIT publishes a broader 2026 tuition planning range of AUD 36,000–56,000 for most international students. [S8] | Upper annual selection |
A UK lower-fee programme may remain cheaper even after a London housing profile is selected. A higher-fee UK programme can erase that advantage. The calculator keeps tuition editable because institution and course choice often changes the result more sharply than food or local transport.
Rent must be attached to a city and a contract basis
UCL publishes a shared privately rented range of £650–£1,300 per month, excluding household bills. That range is used for the London default rather than a single national rent figure. [S9] A more detailed London-only calculation is available through London’s student budget.
Manchester’s official 2026/27 planning page places private house shares with average bills at £645–£710 per month, while private halls are listed at £860–£1,010. Its university accommodation contracts can also be shorter than a 52-week private tenancy, so monthly and full-contract costs should not be treated as interchangeable. [S10]
Lincoln publishes weekly residence rates from £129 to £191 with contract lengths that vary by property. The calculator annualises the weekly rate only for comparison; it does not turn a 40- or 44-week university contract into a claim about a full private-rental year. [S11]
Visa evidence and a real annual budget answer different questions
UK: nine months of maintenance evidence
For the standard Student visa route, the UK requires the course fee shown on the CAS for one academic year (up to nine months), plus maintenance funds of £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. The money normally has to be held for 28 consecutive days, with timing rules linked to the application date. [S16]
That evidence period is not a 12-month spending forecast. A student with a 52-week tenancy, summer living costs or a long pre-course gap may need more cash than the visa maintenance figure suggests.
Australia: twelve months of living evidence
Study Australia’s application process states that international student visa applicants must provide proof of at least AUD 29,710 and warns that actual living costs can be higher. The evidence also sits alongside travel and course costs rather than replacing them. [S17]
The calculator does not treat AUD 29,710 as a city budget. Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide housing are modeled separately, then combined with non-rent living costs and first-year charges.
Health charges are not equivalent
The UK Immigration Health Surcharge is a government charge collected as part of the immigration application. A student visa lasting more than one year can trigger payment for additional half-year or full-year blocks, which is why the calculator offers more than one duration. [S2]
Australia requires OSHC rather than a UK-style surcharge. The policy must normally cover the study stay, and the price changes by insurer, policy dates and whether dependants are included. RMIT’s 2026 single-student reference range is AUD 590–750, which supplies the calculator’s lower, midpoint and upper selections. [S4][S8]
Move-in cash can arrive before the first normal month
Australian private rentals commonly require a bond equal to about four weeks’ rent plus roughly four weeks of rent in advance. That creates an upfront housing payment near eight weeks of rent before furniture, transport from the airport or utility setup is considered. [S18]
UK accommodation timing is less uniform. University halls may bill by term or instalment, while private-rental payment dates follow the tenancy agreement. The calculator therefore keeps arrival money as a separate editable allowance instead of presenting it as a fixed national fee.
| Payment stage | UK route | Australia route |
|---|---|---|
| After accepting an offer | Any tuition deposit stated by the provider | Deposit needed for the Confirmation of Enrolment where the provider requires it |
| Visa application | £558 application fee plus the IHS amount generated by visa length | From AUD 2,500 plus proof of OSHC |
| Housing confirmation | Residence prepayment or private-rental deposit and advance rent | Bond and advance rent can create a large early payment |
| First study month | Rent, food, local travel, phone and course setup | Rent, food, local travel, phone, course setup and any uncovered health costs |
Methodology
The calculator uses 2026 or 2026/27 official fee and accommodation records. UK values remain in pounds. Australian dollar amounts are converted at AUD 1 = GBP 0.5185, the Reserve Bank of Australia published rate for July 17, 2026. [S19]
Weekly rent is converted with weekly rate × 52 ÷ 12. Annual residence fees are divided by 12. The city non-housing amount is a planning bundle derived from official university cost pages; it is not a government tariff. Tuition selections are named institutional references, not national averages. First-year cost equals annual tuition + 12 months of modeled living costs + visa charge + selected health charge + arrival allowance.
The Australia visa fee uses the July 2026 amount, overriding older university pages that may still display a pre-July fee. OSHC remains editable because policy length and household composition affect the quote. The UK IHS options follow the government’s annual and half-year charging rules.
